A New Manager, a New Mood

When Elena was promoted to lead the customer success team at a software company, she inherited a group that was technically skilled but emotionally drained. Her predecessor had focused heavily on metrics and deadlines, often ignoring team input. Morale was low, and turnover was rising.

Elena took a different approach. She began each week with a short team huddle, asking about goals, challenges, and personal wins. She encouraged employees to take ownership of projects and offered mentorship rather than micromanagement.

"I want us to succeed together," she told her team. "We shouldn't just hit numbers. We should grow."

This shift reflected transformational leadership: a style that emphasizes vision, support, and shared purpose. Within a few months, team members were volunteering for crossfunctional projects and offering creative solutions to client issues.

Culture in Transition

Elena's leadership began to reshape the company's organizational culture. Employees felt more connected to their work and to each other.

To support this shift, Elena partnered with human resources to conduct a job analysis. They reviewed each role's responsibilities and identified areas where employees could take more initiative. This helped clarify expectations and allowed Elena to delegate more effectively.

The analysis also revealed that some tasks were misaligned with employee strengths. Elena adjusted assignments to better match individual skills, further boosting engagement.

2. On Your Own

Determine whether the following statement is true or false.

Organizational culture refers to the values, visions, hierarchies, norms, and interactions between employees that shape behavior within a workplace.

Leading by Example

Elena didn't just talk about growth; she modeled it. She attended leadership workshops, asked for feedback from her team, and celebrated both successes and failures as learning opportunities.

Her efforts paid off. The team's performance metrics improved, but more importantly, employee job satisfaction scores rose. Fewer people left the company, and more internal promotions were offered.

"First and foremost, I try to listen," Elena said. "And I want everyone to do better, and not because they have to, but because they want to."
