A New Schedule, a New Start
Ahmed, a sales representative at a small company, had been struggling with burnout. Between long commutes, rigid hours, and back-to-back calls, he often felt drained before noon. His manager, Nell, noticed the drop in morale and decided to pilot a new policy: flex time.
Employees could now choose when to start and end their shifts, as long as they completed their hours and met performance goals. Ahmed opted to begin his day earlier, avoiding traffic and enjoying quiet mornings at his desk.
"I didn't realize how much the schedule was affecting me," he said. "Now I feel like I have control again."
Within weeks, Nell saw improvements across the team. Fewer absences, more positive customer feedback, and a noticeable boost in energy during meetings. The change reflected a shift in the company's organizational culture: from rigid and traditional to adaptive and employee-focused.
1. On Your Own
Listening to Employees
To better understand the impact of flex time, Nell worked with an industrial-organizational psychologist to conduct a job analysis. They reviewed each role's responsibilities and identified which tasks required fixed hours and which could be done flexibly.
They also sent out an anonymous survey. Most employees said they felt more trusted and respected. One wrote, "I finally feel like my manager sees me as a person, not just a worker."
The psychologist explained that when employees feel valued, they're more likely to be engaged and productive. Flex time wasn't just a perk; it was a signal that the company cared about its people.
2. On Your Own
Making It Official
Nell presented the results to senior leadership. She recommended keeping flex time as a permanent option and suggested training managers to support flexible scheduling, and the policy was eventually adopted company-wide. Ahmed now mentors new hires and leads weekly team check-ins. "I'm more than just a voice on the phone," he said. "I'm part of something that works."
Sy's experience shows how psychological insight can lead to healthier digital habits. By recognizing persuasive design and its effects, users can reclaim control over their online behavior.
3. On Your Own
Explore the Concept
Along with a flexible schedule, many companies are also trialing 4-day work weeks. Check out this brief video about companies changing the traditional 5-day work schedule and how it's going.
